What you scared of, Carbohydrates?

CARBOHYDRATES DO NOT MAKE US FAT!

I used to be scared of eating carbs… I followed the trends like ‘Carbs on an evening will make you fat’ and I stopped eating bread, potatoes, pasta, rice.

However I have become more educated since then and I am learning from all the gurus and science out there! I now understand a whole lot more about my bodies energy demands and how it works best to get really good results and most importantly feel healthy! So I want to share this with you to help you be a healthier version of yourself and not avoid carbs:

  1. WHY DO OUR BODIES NEED CARBOHYDRATES?

    • They are our main source of energy whilst exercising

    • They contain fibre and are needed for good digestive health

    • They are vital for brain function

  2. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EAT THEM?

You eat some carbohydrates… Your digestive system breaks them down into simple sugars….these are carried in the bloodstream and delivered to your bodies cells with the help of a hormone called Insulin… these cells provide your body with its energy!

  3. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIMPLE AND COMPLEX CARBS?

There are two types of carbohydrates Simple and Complex.

Simple = Quick Energy Spike eg. Sugars, such as table sugar, honey, sweets and of course high nutritious fruit

Complex = Slow Release Energy eg.Wholegrain’s, rice, quinoa, sweet potato, oats

  4. WHEN IS BEST TO EAT MY CARBOHYDRATES?

EATING CARBS POST TRAINING IS GOOD: EXAMPLE: You have been doing an intense exercise session and your muscles have been using their carbohydrates stores called Glycogen for energy. After your workout these stores are low and they start shouting at you ‘feed me sugar’ because this is the quickest way to replenish them. So you eat some rice cakes with peanut butter and sliced banana on top… The carbs spike your insulin and send both carbs and protein to your muscles to help you recover quicker. Your body digests these quickly and it does not get stored as fat.

EATING SIMPLE CARBS WHEN YOU ARE HAVING A DUVET DAY IS BAD FOR FAT LOSS: You are sitting on the sofa having a film marathon and your body is in a state of complete rest. You eat some SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES like a banana or a bag of chocolate buttons … The carbs spike your insulin and are not needed by your resting muscles at present so they get turned into triglyceride and get stored in fat cells for possible energy use later. If you do too much of this you will produce more insulin and this will make your brain think you need more sugar which means you can say ‘Hello’ to those sugar cravings!

  5. SO, EATING CARBS DOESNT MAKE ME FAT?

Carbohydrates don’t make you fat, only eating more than your energy demands will. You may find a low carb diet works better for you and endurance runners especially adapt to using fat for fuel well. However more explosive exerciser’s need their carbs for energy, good performance and recovery.

    6. CARBOHYDRATES ARE NOT SINS THEY ARE FUEL!

I eat carbohydrates with all my meals matching my bodies energy demands on active days and on days that I am not so active I eat 1 meal with carbohydrates and less of them. I don’t save all my carbs for the weekend and have a blow out whilst lying around or not being very active. I eat my favourite carbohydrates after I have exercised or at the end of an active day to make sure my body gets the benefits of them.
